This is a basic haunted house story, but I really liked it. It starts, like many similar stories, with the main character seeing things other people don’t, so her sanity is questioned and so forth. However, the fact the main character is a Muslim makes the story stand out from other similar stories and it does a great job building tension by having racism and paranoia divide the neighbors of the apartment building from each other.
Also, the artwork is great. I liked how the ghosts appeared to be out of focus with twisted bodies and how a childhood flashback is done in a childlike art style. There’s also some great lines like “My mother’s all about obsessing over the shadows in a room full of light.” Star Wars fans have also got to love the Sarlacc bundt cake!
The movie rights to this were purchased before the comic was even finished being published. I know movies often end up not getting made for a variety of reasons, but I’d really love to see this one get made. Both terrifying and thought-provoking.
