Everything That’s Underneath by Kristi DeMeester

The stories in the first half of this book felt vague with nothing for me to latch on to, if that makes sense. The stories in the second half get better.

I liked “Daughters of Hecate” although the ending felt abrupt. “Birthright” is another good one. Sad, but in a good way. In “All That is Refracted, Broken”, Paul never looks at his big sister, even when he’s a baby, but he does look at other people. He only looks at her through mirrors. A clever idea and a good way to start a weird story. However, like many of the stories in this collection, the ending felt unresolved. “December Skin” is another good story which ended abruptly and felt unresolved at the end.

“Split Tongues” is the best story in the collection. I think it’s the longest story, so there’s a lot to sink your teeth into. “To Sleep in the Dust of the Earth” is another good one.

Overall, a good collection. I liked the stories in the second half better than the first. The endings often felt like abrupt stops rather than resolutions, but I really liked the writing style and many of the weird ideas.
